Lecture Effectively in English
Do you need to lecture or teach in English to mixed mother-tongue student groups?
This course aims to give you essential tips for preparing and delivering engaging and effective lectures. This course will examine different lecturing styles and consider how to structure a lecture to maximise engagement. Topics covered include the importance of signposting and pacing, using engaging visual aids and how to employ nonverbal communication.
Course Content
- Adapt the principles of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) to challenge of lecturing in English to diverse mother tongue groups
- Practice essential academic grammar: conjunctions, conditionals, interrogative phrasing
- Structuring lectures: introductions, key points, and conclusions
- Finding the right register: formal, informal, consultative
- Signposting key points and important concepts
- Using visual aids and non-verbal communication to convey information
